In our previous post, we began discussing why each member of Lebanon Baptist Church should commit to being equipped through LifeStage Classes. There are 4 different objectives we are exploring:
- Biblical literacy + Theological Understanding
- Practical Life-application + Obedience
- Mutual Care + Discipling
- Leadership Training + Development
In this post, we will consider the first one:
Biblical literacy & theological understanding
Scripture reveals that the choices we make flow from the desires and affections of our heart. But those desires are directly rooted in what we know, understand, and believe to be true about God (James 1:14-17). This means that biblical literacy and theological understanding should be something we are very concerned about!
In his book, The Christian Life, Sinclair Ferguson says,
It is one of the enigmas of our day that in a world of great opportunities, many Christians have less knowledge of Christian doctrine than children at Sunday School had in previous centuries … It may also be one reason for the difference between the quality of Christian character of previous eras and the relatively poor standard of our own Christian lives today.
So, how committed are you to growing in your understanding of the Word of God? If you are not intentional about becoming skilled in reading and understanding the Bible, you are susceptible to being “carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” (Ephesians 4:14). That’s not good for you, or for this church.

To grow in our loving obedience to God, and remain faithful to His purposes for our lives, our knowledge of His Word must be growing and deepening. Beware of those that teach that you can faithfully love and follow Jesus without being a diligent student of the Bible. You cannot separate Jesus from the truths that Scripture reveals about Him (2 Corinthians 3:18). Be very suspicious of prevalent ideas that you can experience a deeper understanding of God apart from interacting with the Scriptures. Run from those that promote trying to hear to God speak apart from His Word (2 Peter 1:16-21). A life-changing knowledge of God is a knowledge gained through the objective unchanging Truth of His Word (Psalm 19:7-14; 2 Timothy 3:14-17).
In our main gatherings, we practice a systematic expositional approach to specific books and passages of Scripture, but LifeStage Classes present a different environment for learning. Of course, we are still committed to a faithful explanation and application of the Word, but the classes are a smaller, more informal environment for learning through teaching and discussion.
- You’ll explore biblical topics like walking in the Spirit, the Trinity, and the believer’s union with Christ.
- You’ll grow in your understanding of larger sections and themes of the Bible by surveying the big picture of who God is and what He is doing.
- You’ll discuss a variety of life issues and topics from work to marriage to decision-making to finances.
- You’ll investigate the core doctrines of the Christian faith.
- You’ll learn what it means to be a part of a church and why it matters.
- You’ll be challenged to give yourself to God’s priorities through local evangelism and global missions.
We all want to be rooted and grounded in Christ. We all desire to “continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel.” We should make it our goal to more be equipped to read, understand, and apply the Bible properly. We all need to grow in our confidence in proclaiming the message of Christ and engaging in meaningful gospel conversations with unbelievers. So why not place yourself under the consistent sound teaching of the Word by way of LifeStage Classes?
