Ecclesiastes Sermon Series

Ecclesiastes Sermon Series

Beginning this March, I am looking forward to shepherding our church through a sermon series on the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes. The book ends with the revelation that the wise words recorded in this book were given by One Shepherd (Ecclesiastes 12:11).

The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd.

I personally believe this refers to none other than our Lord Jesus! These are Old Testament words preserved for us to help shepherd us home to His presence.

I am entitling this sermon series Under the Sun. This little phrase “under the sun” shows up repeatedly in Ecclesiastes to characterize our short life on earth. In fact, the Psalmist elaborates on this short human life in Psalm 90:10, The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away. All through the Bible, we are confronted with the reality that our lives are short. Even more, we find that the meaning of this short life often seems elusive and difficult to apprehend.

In Ecclesiastes, we will hear Solomon, the wisest man that ever lived (other than the God/Man, Jesus Christ) provide invaluable counsel on how to navigate life rightly in this broken-down world. We will learn to embrace life with an “upward perspective” – one that is characterized by joy and a celebration of each moment as a gift from God! We will also learn that these moments often come to us in the midst of deep trials and challenging conundrums. As we learn to walk in the fear of the Lord, our lives will find true meaning, purpose, and perspective.

In preparation for this series, I would like to encourage you to begin reading through the book and considering the truths we will discuss each Sunday. Also, it may be helpful to purchase an ESV Journal for Ecclesiastes. We have a limited number available for $4. Click here to reserve a journal. Be sure to indicate the number of journals you will need.

I trust that through this series you will be renewed by your heavenly Shepherd as we explore these often neglected pastures!
