Are You A Healthy Church Member?

Are You A Healthy Church Member?

But, how does being a part of a local church produce spiritual growth in individuals, and how do individuals contribute to the growth and health of the whole body?

This is the significance and intent of what is known as church membership.

Now, be very careful, when you think of church membership, do not let Sam’s Club, LA Fitness, or AAA hijack your understanding. In the New Testament, the terminology of membership is not about a loyalty program in a certain club. Paul used the term in reference to body parts.

As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. (1 Corinthians 12:20)

There was a mutual recognition, an interconnected dependence, and an active responsibility with one another (1 Corinthians 12:4-27). In other words, membership is so much greater than just having your name on a roster, or even gaining voting privileges. If church membership were merely about voting and spreadsheets, then it is completely unworthy of the Gospel of King Jesus, and we should abandon it altogether! But, if we understand membership in terms of a mutually recognized, vital relationship that is committed to helping each other stay faithful to Jesus for His glory, then a healthy church member will embrace that biblical reality and commit to the privileges, responsibilities, and expectations of a member.

If church membership were merely about voting and spreadsheets, then it is completely unworthy of the Gospel of King Jesus. Click To Tweet

What Is a Healthy Church Member? takes its cue from the book What Is a Healthy Church? In this book, pastor and author Thabiti Anyabwile seeks to explore what a healthy church member should be in the light of Scripture.

A healthy church member is someone that, in one sense, shares all the sensibilities of a good pastor. (Thabiti Anyabwile) Click To Tweet

We encourage each member of LBC to get a copy of this book and read through it. It will be most helpful if you’ll read through it with other members of the church and discuss it together. You can get a copy of the book (hardcover or Kindle) through Amazon.

Maybe you are not a member of a church, but you are curious about what that means from a Biblical perspective. We invite you to learn more of what the Bible says about the local church, church membership, and what it means for you in our Lebanon 101 or Church Basics class.
